Rockets, Remedies, and Resolutions: Musk and Kennedy Take On Health

Do We Have To Choose Between Medication And Health Promotion?

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has emphasized the importance of providing nutritious meals and promoting physical activity as primary solutions to obesity. His statement that "if we just gave good food, three meals a day, to every man, woman, and child in our country, we could solve the obesity and diabetes epidemic overnight" underscores the multifactorial challenges of chronic disease in our country.

Moreover, Kennedy's comment about Americans being "so stupid and so addicted to drugs" reflects frustration with societal habits but overlooks systemic barriers that limit access to healthy food and education about nutrition.

Pharmaceuticals: A Tool, Not a Crutch

Elon Musk's advocacy for GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic and Wegovy highlights their potential to support individuals in their weight-loss journeys. These medications can be life-changing for people with severe obesity, especially when traditional methods have failed.

However, relying solely on pharmaceuticals raises concerns about sustainability, long-term health outcomes, and affordability. Drugs like Ozempic are expensive, and their benefits are often contingent on continued use. This highlights the need for medications to be part of a broader strategy, rather than a standalone solution.

Why a Combined Approach Works Best

Obesity is a multifaceted condition influenced by biology, behavior, and environment. Addressing it effectively requires a holistic approach that integrates lifestyle changes with pharmaceutical support when necessary.

  1. Lifestyle as Prevention: Healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and stress management form the foundation for preventing obesity and related conditions. Public health policies that increase access to nutritious food and safe spaces for exercise can empower communities.

  2. Medications as a Catalyst: For individuals struggling with severe obesity or conditions like diabetes, medications can provide the jumpstart needed to achieve measurable progress. These drugs can reduce appetite, improve metabolic health, and enhance the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions.

  3. Support Systems: Combining dietary changes, exercise, and medication with counseling or behavioral therapy can address the emotional and psychological factors contributing to obesity.

Can't we all just get along ? Why do our leaders feel we have to choose between medication and health promotion?

Not long ago, I left a position under some of the best leadership in the world to pursue a vision that was ignited during my time there. (And if my former leader ever sees this—months later, I stand by that statement!)

In that role, I had the opportunity to integrate a health promotion approach alongside prescribing GLP therapy. The results? Incredible. Life-altering. Transformative.

It was in that position that I realized medicine could be so much more—it was the kind of experience that changed the way I view healthcare entirely. That realization is what led me to create my companies, driven by a simple yet powerful belief:

We don’t have to choose between medication and health promotion. We can and should have both.
